Water & SewageRAIN BARRELS: You can buy them or build them or improvise. We have a few inexpensive plastic 30-gal kitchen garbage cans that we place beneath the runoff (no guttering yet) points. To prevent mosquito breeding, we use scrap plywood squares (I'm using these to experiment with a decoupage flooring technique. The barrels can be hidden by placing a trellis around it and growing vines or the simple use of stakes and mesh netting on which lightweight vines can grow. We simply remove the cover, dip in our watering cans, water our garden and recover the trash can. One good day's rain can fill all our cans. When it's raining a lot, sometimes we use the watering cans to transfer some of it to "ëmergency supplies." These are the large pails we get laundry detergent in or find behind fast food places (they get pickles & such in these).
LEAKY PIPES (Clean Water) We can't always repair these within minutes. So we place utility pails below, collect the water (we're paying for it after all), and use that in the garden or . That said, we keep a stock of the most common parts (washers, sealant, etc.) on hand. WAITING FOR THE WATER TO GET HOT Shower/Sink Our shower has a handheld unit. I keep a utility pail handy. I run the water into that until it gets warm enough (yes yes I do plan on adding instahot water heaters when I can afford it.) When I'm through showering, I aim the handheld into the pail until I get the water turned off. There's a handy little pour spout and I let the showerhead rest just inside that to catch any drips left in the line. I use the pail water in the garden, for mopping and cleaning, etc. In the sinks, I put a large plastic cup with a lid to catch the water. Then I pop on the lid, and I have prepoured water for the coffeemaker. :) In the bathroom, I use it to brush my teeth and rinse my mouth.
