DIABETES TYPE II
When the doctor first told me I was diabetic some 10 years or so ago, I simply wasn't terribly concerned. I had already detected a pattern of high blood sugar when I was on prednisone which went away when I went off the prednisone. In those days, I was never on it for more than 6 months. Now I have been on it over a year. I made a sincere effort to regulate my blood sugar levels after I was hospitalized last May. I'df get a normal reading, then I'd eat breakfast and take my medications and the darned thing would be out of whack the rest of the day. If I was in one of my short sleep cycle phases, it would be out of whack until I'd had at least one period of 6 straight hours of sleep. Let me tell you, when you're taking heavy duty diuretics, that's not often! Then I noticed that when I took the prednisone at night, after dinner, my blood sugar would be less out of whack through the day, but my morning reading before breakfast was high.
Finally I looked up my other drugs and discovered that at least two of them were associated with elevated blood sugar. Frankly, I said "To heck with it! The prednisone is going to shave years off my life anyway (per my doctor),. This is impossible and WHY did the Ben Taub Docs rail at me about my diabetes and then knowing I was taking prednisone, prescribe two drugs which also raise blood sugar?" I pretty much gave up caring about my blood sugar readings.
What diet and exercise can't do, I won't worry about much. I'll try herbal remedies. I'm not advising others to do the same. I'm merely reporting my position on the issue.
Now there's even more news on the drugs and blood sugar readings & weight gain front:. Some of the drugs given for diabetes cause weight gain!
Insulin Sensitizers
rosiglitazone (Avandia) Only available to those who have exhausted other options due to increased risk of heart attack.
pioglitazone (Actos)
OTHER DRUGS
Metformin (the drug my husband & I were both given for diabetes!

DRUGS THAT MAY RAISE BLOOD SUGAR [not all are proven to have this effect & and apprerntly even if they are, it's not in all patients]
