For the Birds...
My love of birds began when my maternal grandfather stood with me at the back fence (barbed wire in '57) and taught me how to identify some bird calls. Bob white quail, which are disappearing fast, Whooperwills, jays, crows, mocking birds. This area was mostly wooded then, and there were many birds to observe and listen. I love waking up to bird songs in the morning.. Unfortunately, songbirds are declining in the US: pesticides, destruction of habitat, viruses. This is one reason I have started building a Texas Wildscape in my yard

Birds I have observed or heard August 9 - October 31Downy Woodpecker or Hairy? The bird I saw in early August was even smaller than 6.5", maybe 4-5" so it might have been a juvenile of either species. At the time I didn't know how to distinguish between them either.
